Insurance Claims - Do's & Don'ts
Water Damage:
- Damage from water and bacteria growth can begin within hours. Call for professional help.
- Do remove as much water as possible by mopping and blotting.
- Do lift draperies; remove area rugs; remove as much furniture to a dry area.
- Don't enter a room with standing water until electricity is off.
- Don't lift tacked-down carpet without professional help.
Smoke/Fire Damage:
- Corrosive byproducts can cause irreversible etching in as few as 72 hours. Do call for professional help.
- Do clean Formica, chrome, porcelain and aluminum fixtures to prevent permanent tarnishing.
- Don't wash down walls. Incorrect cleaning could compound the soot residue.
- Don't attempt to clean carpets or upholstered furniture.
- Don't use electrical appliances until having them checked.
Vandalism:
- Do make a list of all damage.
- Do use shop vacuum to remove glass particles from carpet.
- Do call a professional restoration company.
- Don't use household cleaners on carpet/upholstery/fabrics
